Why LifeSmart?
Quite simply, because First Aid Training save lives.
Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death and disability among youth today, accounting for up to 74% of fatalities each year. By equipping students with the essential life skills that come with First Aid and CPR Training, LifeSmart seeks to challenge the number of such incidences and, in so doing, make both our schools and communities safer environments for all.
LifeSmart Is...
Free of charge: Teachers and students receive training at no cost to themselves. St. John Ambulance also provides, free of charge, all equipment and instructional materials to the schools. These include infantry mannequins, instructional videos, Actars, textbooks, and activity books.
Effective: Studies show that St. John Ambulance Training Programs result in a 30 to 50 percent reduction in medical emergencies among those trained.
Expansive: LifeSmart is designed to reach high-school students throughout Nova Scotia. However, its benefits extend beyond the provincial school system. Since each member of the student population is also a member of a family and a larger geographical/social community, the program has the potential to reach thousands of other Nova Scotians.
An asset for employment: First Aid Training in the workplace is required under the terms of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act. As a result, valid First Aid certification may increase a student’s prospects for part-time employment.
Convenient: LifeSmart is flexible, allowing teachers to determine the optimum time at which to incorporate First Aid Training into the curriculum. Since training takes place within the school, logistical considerations are also minimized.
LifeSmart is an innovative and comprehensive First Aid Training Program designed to reach high-school students throughout Canada. The first and only program of its kind in Canada, LifeSmart is a collaborative effort between St. John Ambulance and the Nova Scotia Department of Education.
